100 year old  Banana Pudding Recipe.


Recently,  a very close  family friend passed away.  She was 97 years old.  When I  went to visit her in the hospital  I asked if there was anything she wanted.  Her only request was  for  'real' banana pudding like her mother made.  That meant everything from scratch including  the  cookies  that are used for layering.  So, for this recipe  you will need to make a couple dozen  vanilla sugar cookies.  (day old cookies  work better than fresh).  The recipe  for  sugar cookies is on  this site but to make it easier,  I pasted  the sugar cookie  recipe at the  bottom of this page.


The ingredients you will need   for  this recipe :

A dozen or so  vanilla sugar cookies
5 or 6  bananas ( sliced)
1 3/4 cups sugar
3 cups of  whole milk
3 tablespoons  flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/4 teaspoon  cream of tarter

Preheat oven to 325
You will first make the  custard, then you will  layer the custard, cookies and bananas in a baking dish. Then you will make a merengue and spread that  on top of the pudding and bake the  entire pudding  until the merengue is done.


To make the Custard:

Separate the  4 eggs.  Lightly  beat  the egg yolks and combine them with the 3 cups of milk. Lightly whisk the  egg yolks and milk together.

In a sauce pan combine  1/ 1/2  cups of sugar, 3 tablespoons of flour, 1/8 teaspoon of salt.  Whisk the dry ingredients  together until smooth.  Add the egg and milk mixture to the dry ingredients. Whisk together.  Bring mixture to a  boil over medium heat stirring  constantly with whisk.    Once it has thickened, remove from heat  and stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla.

In a 2 or 3 quart  baking dish
Make a layer of the  sugar cookies on the bottom and sides of dish. Then add a layer of bananas  over the cookies then pour a layer of the  custard  mixture over  the cookies and bananas.  Repeat layering 2 to three times.  Set aside.

To make the Merengue:
Combine together the 4 egg whites and the 1/4 teaspoon  cream of tarter.  Whip on high speed until it begins to foam.  Once it begins to  foam add 1/4 cup sugar and  1 teaspoon vanilla.  Continue to whip until  eggs whites  form stiff peaks.


Spoon  the merengue   gently on top of  pudding, spreading and shaping as you go.

Bake for  25 to 30 minutes until  the merengue is golden brown.









100 year old Amish  sugar cookie recipe

1 pound butter
3 cups  sugar
4 well beaten eggs
8 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp soda
4 tsp baking powder
2 cups heavy cream
1 tbsn vanilla

Cream together butter,sugar,eggs and vanilla. Then add your cream slowly.  Then add all other ingredients. Roll out dough to about 1/2 inch thick and  cut  desired shape.  Bake for 8 minutes at 350 degrees.  Do not over bake as this will dry out your cookies. You may need to experiment with the temp a bit as each oven differs.
